Pencil and Brush

The only difference between the brush (1) and the pencil (2) tools are the edges.
With the pencil, it is more serrated (1), with the brush, it is more fluid (2).
They call it Anti-aliasing.

The rest remains the same for both these tools.
I’ll quickly go through them once.
At the top we have the “Mode” checkbox. This is how we define the transition between the different layers.
The box “Opacity” seems clear.
Below that we have the Brush option. By clicking it, a list of default brushes opens that you use to draw. The same list is displayed in the Brushes dialog (A).

Under the brush option we find the “Scale” option. This is used to define the brush size.
We can then select the “Brush Dynamics” option. This option is only applicable when working with a pressure sensitive pen. I do not, so I cannot explain this operation.

The “Fade Out” option ensures that each line you draw over a set distance, is gradually weakened.

With the option “Apply Jitter” we determine whether we want spaces in between the lines. The higher the number the larger the distance between the lines. You should try this but, this I think its clear.

The next option is the option, “Incremental”.
I have nothing useful to say about this.

The last option “Use color from gradient” leaves us with a color gradient from the list to choose from.

Tip
To draw a straight line, keep the Shift key on your keyboard pressed.

Eraser

Using the “Eraser” tool we can crop parts of a photograph or drawn object. I think everyone knows that.
But what we can do is create a softer jagged edge.
Select this tool in the toolbox, and select a pencil with a soft edge.
Then pass over the edge of the drawn line and the edge will be smoother.

Tip.
If you want to erase something, first make the selection. This way you can erase nothing other than what is in this selection.

Air Brush

The Air Brush tool can be compared to a can of paint. This can be used something like, for example; a graffiti can which is used to write on walls.
The longer you use this at one point, the more paint is sprayed at that particular point.
The same also for the air brush tool of GIMP. The longer you are at a point in the document window with the mouse button pressed, the darker the color will be.

Ink bottle

The ink tool simulates the use of a calligraphic pen.
The options for the ink tool are a bit different from those of the pencil and the brush.
For example, there under the section, “Adjustments”, we have the options, “Size” and “Angle” where you can set the size and the angle of the brush tip.
In the “Sensitivity” section you enter the settings when you work with a pressure sensitive pen.
Then you have three different types of pens. They are the circle, square, and diamond.

When you’ve chosen a type, you can change the shape of the point by clicking and dragging the white square.
