Example:

In this example I will give the picture an artistic border with the “Waves” filter by using a quick mask.
Obviously, you can use only the filter, if you want.

The first thing I do is to make a selection in the photo (1) with the “Rectangular Selection” tool.

Then I click the “Quick Mask” button (2).

In Quick Mask mode, I click “Filters” in the menu bar, select “Distorts” in the drop-down menu, and click “Waves”.

You can select any filter of your choice.

In the “Waves” filter dialog you have various options.
A preview is shown in the preview window (A).
Click the OK button when you are satisfied.

We then return to normal mode and invert the selection.
I hope you haven’t forgotten how to do it.
Click “Select” in the menu bar and select “Invert” from the drop-down menu.
Then press the Delete key on the keyboard.
Our picture now has an artistic border.
