Office 2007 - PowerPoint

Lesson 40: What is Slide Master?

What is a “Slide Master”?

A “Slide Master” determines the basic appearance of all slides in your presentation.
The “Slide Master” is basically a template where we store information about the size and position of placeholder boxes, background design, color schemes, fonts, etc.
In other words, with the aid of a “Slide Master” we may make changes, such as the addition of a logo, so that this change is applied to all slides in the presentation.

An example of a “Slide Master” is the “Office” theme, with its 9 underlying slide layouts:

  1. “Title Slide”
  2. “Title and Content”
  3. “Section Header”
  4. “Two Content”
  5. “Comparison”
  6. “Title Only”
  7. “Blank”
  8. “Content with Caption”
  9. “Picture with Caption”

If you do not know what a slide layout is, please read the last part of Lesson 4 again.

When we make a change in the “Master” slide, the change is applied to all slides in the presentation, created with that particular “Slide Master”.

When we make a change in an underlying slide layout in a “Slide Master”, then this change applied to all slides in the presentation, created with the related underlying slide layout.

This becomes clear in subsequent lessons.

We find the “Slide Master” under the “View” tab in the “Ribbon”.

If we click the “Slide Master” button, it is added as a tab to the “Ribbon”.
The “Slideshow” tab is then removed from the “Ribbon”.

The “Slide Master”, which is the “Office theme slide master” in this case, and its underlying theme slide layouts are displayed in the pane on the left of the application window.

When your mouse pointer moves over the various slide layouts in the panel, a small box containing the information about the type and its use are shown.
The top slide of the “Slide Master” is called the “Master” slide, and the rest are called the underlying slides.

In order to close the “Slide Master” View, click the “Close Master View” button.
This brings you back to the view where you were, before you switched to the “Slide Master” view.
Tip:
To quickly switch to the “Slide Master” view, keep the “Shift” key on your keyboard pressed and click the “Normal” button in the “Status bar”.
