Office 2007 - Excel

Lesson 20: Templates (cont…)

20/83 Lessons

A Workbook from a “Template”.

In this example, I will downloaded a “Template” from Microsoft.
I choose a category, select a “Template”, and click the “Download” button.
A pop-up window appears with the message that I need to work with an authenticated version of “Excel 2007”.

This is obviously the case, so I click the “Next” button.
Excel performs a check as to whether this is true, and I can download the “Template”in no time.
It automatically creates a new “Workbook” with the name of the “Template”.

If you want to use this “Template” later again, you need not to download it again.
You’ll find it on the “Empty and recently opened” tab in the “New Workbook” dialog.

If you want this “Template” to be placed in the “My Templates” folder, you must first save as a template.
Proceed as follows:
Click the “Office” button in the “Ribbon” and choose “Save”.
In the “Save As”dialog , click the downward pointing arrow and choose “Excel template (*.xltx)”.

As from then, we can find this template in the “My Templates” folder.
To use it, select it and click OK at the bottom of the dialog.

Create a template

When you repeatedly use the same layout of a “Worksheet”, it is convenient to make this as a “Template”.
First open the “Workbook”, and click “Office” button in the “Ribbon”.
Choose “Save as …”
And in the dialog box, click the downward pointing arrow next to the “Save as” box and choose “Excel template (*.xltx)”.
Now, this template will also show in the “My Templates” dialog tab.

Modify A “Template”

Sometimes we may need to modify an existing template.
We must modify the template itself, and not a “Worksheet” which is created on this template.
Otherwise, we need to do this every time when we use the template.
To do this click the “Office” button in the “Ribbon”, and select “Open”.
Navigate to the “Templates” folder.

Select the “Template”, and click “Open”.
Make necessary changes and save the template.

Remove template

If you have templates that you no longer use, you can remove them from the templates folder.
For this we have a number of ways.
The easiest and quickest way is to click the “Office” button in the “Ribbon”.
Select “New” from the menu list.
Choose the “My Templates” tab.
This opens the dialog box with your templates.
Right-click the template, and select “Delete”.
Confirm by clicking “Yes”
Now your template will be in the trash.
If you have deleted it by mistake, you can look for it in the trash, select the file, right click and choose “Restore”.
Once it is removed from the trash, you can not restore it.
