Lesson 24: Page Background

Page Borders

In Word 2007, we can place borders around about everything, documents, pages, paragraphs, sections, images …
The “Page Borders” option we find under the tab “Page Layout” in the ribbon.
When we click this button, it opens the dialog “Borders and Shading”.

In this dialog we have three tabs, with the tab “Page Border” selected by default.
On the left we have the various settings.
In the middle we have the style, color, thickness, and whether or not we want to use an illustration. This all seems clear enough.
On the right we have the example with the four buttons (top, bottom, left and right) where we want to have an edge.
Plus the box “Apply to”.
These seem to be quite clear.

If you want the edges to be just a part of a text or a paragraph, select the tab “Borders”.
Here you will find in the box “Apply to” with the options “Text” and “Paragraph”.

If you want certain parts of your text to be shaded, select the tab “Shading”.
That is quite logical.

Page Color

By default, it is black text on a white page.
But we have the possibility to change it.
Click on the button “Page Color”, under the tab “Page Layout” in the ribbon.
This opens a menu with different colors from which you can choose a background for your document.
If you choose a dark background color, then Word will automatically adjust the text to a light color.
The “Live Preview” will show you an example of the color before you apply them by clicking.
The selected background color is applied to the whole document.

Watermark

The option “Watermark” adds text or image in the background of your document.
We can find the “Watermark” under the tab “Page Layout” in the ribbon.
When we click this we have a number of predefined watermarks, divided into groups, plus the option “Custom Watermark …” and “Remove Watermark”.
Clicking on the button “Custom Watermark …”, gives us the opportunity to make a text type that we want to use as a watermark, or a picture to choose on our PC that we want to use as a watermark.
If we choose “Text watermark,” then we have the possibility to choose the font, the size, and the color, and whether we want it to appear horizontally or diagonally in our document.

Click OK when you are satisfied.
