Select text

We can select text in different ways, using both the mouse and the keyboard.

The most common way is to select with the mouse.

Click at the beginning of the text that you want to select.

Hold the mouse button and drag over the text that you want to select.

To deselect, click anywhere in the document.

To only select a word, double click on the word with the mouse.

To select an entire paragraph, triple click a word with the mouse.

You can also use your mouse in combination with your keyboard to select text.

Just click at the beginning of the text you want to select, hold the Shift key on your keyboard and click with your mouse on the place you want to stop the selection.

The “click – shift click” method works in all applications from Microsoft and is used to select adjoining data.

For non-adjacent data to select, use the “click – Ctrl click” method.

For example, select the first word, hold the Ctrl key on your keyboard pressed and click the next word or phrase.

We can use the Ctrl key, to select a sentence.
Click and hold the Ctrl key down, and click a word in the sentence.

Another way to select text is to place your mouse pointer in the left margin, until it changes into a white arrow.
Click the mouse once to select 1 line.
Click and drag the mouse to select different lines.
Double-clicking in the left margin will select the entire paragraph.
Triple-clicking the mouse will select all text.

Document Views

In Word 2007 we have different views to work in.
The various view options are found under the tab “View” at the top of the ribbon,

and to the bottom of the application window to the right of the status bar.

Default is set to “Print Layout”.
The “Print Layout” shows us the margins, headers and footers and all formatting capabilities that were used in our document.

Under the tab “View” we have the Zoom group.
By default, our document is in 100% size.
You can see that in the Zoom slider at the bottom.

In the tab “View” we have the possibility to view one or two pages of our document.

This makes it easy to see how our document overflows from one sheet to another.

The option “Page width” displays the document in the entire screen width.

To return to the 100% view, click the button “100%”.

The “Web Layout” view shows how your document would look when you publish it on the Internet.

The display “Draft” gives us the page breaks.

It shows us no margins or headers and footers.

“Outline” view shows us document formatting in an overview.

When you select “outline”, an extra tab “Outlining”appears on the ribbon:

Outline view allows us to expand certain information in our document so that it is easy to work from different areas in our document.

You can expand the areas by clicking on the plus and minus buttons in the ribbon, or double-clicking in the document.

In order to close the outline view, click the button “Close Outline View” in the ribbon.

The view “Full Screen Reading” is new to Word 2007, and is discussed in the next lesson.
