The title bar

We find the title bar at the top of our window.
On the right side of the title bar, we find three buttons:
Minimize, Maximize and Close.

Clicking on the “Minimize” button places the application in the Windows Task Bar.
Clicking the “Maximize” button enlarges the application window to full screen size.
The button “Maximize” is a “Toggle button”, or “toggle”. When this is clicked, the button will change to “Restore”.
When we click the “Restore” button, we can adjust the size of the window by clicking on the edges and dragging.
Clicking the “Close” button, closes the application.
Remember this, when you use these buttons, they relate to the application.

The ribbon

The main tool in Word 2007 is the Ribbon.
All commands that we can perform on our document are located here.
The ribbon is divided into 7 different tabs:
Home, Insert, Page Layout, References, Mailings, Review, and View.

On each tab we find different groups of commands.

For example, the tab “Home” is divided into the groups “Clipboard”, “Font”, “Paragraph” “Styles” and “Editing”.

Some of these groups have a downward pointing arrow to the right.
When we click it opens a dialogbox with more options.
When we double-click the selected tab, this will hide the ribbon.
This gives us even more workspace.
Double clicking on the tab again shows us the ribbon.

Besides the regular tabs, some contextual tabs appear during some operations at the end of the ribbon.

As the name suggests, a contextual tab offers access buttons that you may need. For example we have inserted a table, you may need some additional tools to edit the table.
Contextual tabs are always on the right of the Ribbon. The tab name, in this case “Table Tools” appears in the title bar. This is done to make room for the (sub) devices with tabs, which are added on the row with the standard tabs. These (sub) tabs are all under the contextual tab.
The various groups that appear when a (sub) tab is selected, are all related to the selected object in our document.
To hide the Contextual tabs “de-select” the object.

The Office Button

The Office Button gives us access to the basic features of Word 2007.
When we click this button, it opens a panel with on the left with several basic commands.
For example, “New”, “Open” and “Save” and “Save as …”, “Print”, etc.

On the right we find a list of the nine recently opened documents.
You can adjust this number in the Word Options dialog box, which we will discuss later.

Clicking on the button “Exit Word” at the bottom right, closes the application.
Clicking the command “Close” to the left of the panel closes the document, not the application.
