Lesson 50 : Citations & Bibliography (2)

50/57 Lessons

Placeholder

We use a placeholder for a citation, if we later want to enter the full source information.
This allows us to continue typing without first having to go through all the steps to add a citation.
Select the location in your document where you want to insert the placeholder.
Click the button “Insert Citation” under the tab “References” in the ribbon, and select “Add New placeholder” from the drop-down list.

This opens a dialog where we can give a preferably applicable, name for our placeholder.
Click the OK button in the dialog box when you’re done.
The placeholder is inserted in your document, and this also adds to the gallery, plus the list in Source Manager, which we have seen in the previous lesson.

Editing Placeholders

When we have placeholders added to our document, we must fill it later.
Just click the button “Manage Sources” under the tab “References” in the ribbon.
This opens the dialog “Source Manager”.
In the section “Current List” you can see the used “Placeholders” in your document.
Select it and click the “Edit” button.
This opens the dialog “Edit Source”.
These are the same actions you can enter here as in the previous lesson “Adding a new resource.” So this I will not explain again.

Click OK when all the information is accurate.
Note that in the dialog “Source Manager” the question has changed to a checkmark.

Source data change

We can modify Source data in various ways.
One is to right click on the quote in your document and to select “Edit Source” in the drop-down menu.
This opens the dialog “Edit Source”.
Enter your changes and click the OK button.
Word 2007 will warn you that this source already exists in your document, and whether you want to update this.
Click “Yes” if you wish to, or click “No” when you do not want, or click “Cancel” if you want to undo this change.

When you have selected the option “Yes”, all citations that refer to this source, get adjusted.

A second way to change data source, is by clicking on the button “Manage Sources” in the ribbon.
In the dialog that appears, select the source in the left or the right window, and click the “Edit” button.

Remove all sources

To remove a source from our list click the button “Manage Sources” in the dialog. Select the source you want to remove from the list on the left, and click the “Delete” button. Please note that when you delete a source, it is gone for good.

Sources which have been used in the document, and therefore, in the right window, cannot be removed.

Insert Bibliography

To insert a bibliography in your document, click the “Bibliography” tab under “References” in the ribbon.
This opens a drop-down list with two pre-formatted bibliographies, “Built-in” and “Works Cited”.
The third option, “Insert Bibliography” gives a bibliography without title.

To insert a bibliography in your document, click it in the drop-down menu.

Bibliography remove

To delete a bibliography in our document, click on the mouse to select it.
This shows us three dots at the top left of our bibliography.
This selects the entire bibliography.
Click the Delete key on your keyboard.
This removes the entire bibliography in your document.
