Creating and Editing Coloumns

In Word, we have the option to set our text, or parts from our text, in columns.
The “Columns” option can be found under the tab “Page Layout” in the ribbon.
When we click this button, we have a choice of adding 1 column, two columns or three columns,
And the options Left and Right. Left and right divides the text into two columns, one narrow and one wide.

To remove columns, click the “Undo”, or click the “Columns” and choose “One” in the drop-down menu.

In order to adjust columns, place the cursor anywhere in a column, no matter where, and again click button “Columns” in the ribbon.
Select at the bottom of the list the option “More columns”.

This opens the dialog “Columns”.

In this dialog we can
1. set the number of columns.
2. place a line between columns
3. can manually enter the column width for each column and
4. these settings apply to the whole document or from a particualr point.

If you want the column width manually set, then you should check the option “Equal column width” off by clicking it.

“From this point,” they mean the point where your cursor is at that time.

Have you sections inserted into your document, then this option will also be listed in the drop-down menu “Apply to”.
To break down every coloumn at a certain place, for example between two paragraphs, insert a column break after the previous paragraph.
For those who have forgotten how to do this:
Place the cursor after the paragraph where you want to start the new column.
Choose the tab “Page Layout” in the ribbon, and click the “Breaks”.
Click the option “Column”. This adds a column break, and any text inserted belowcomes in the next column.

Width of columns set by the ruler

Another way to set the width of the column, is by means of the ruler.
Place the cursor in the column whose width you want to change.
To change the column width, place the cursor in the ruler, and when it changes into a double arrow, click and drag it to the desired width.

Hyphenation

By using the “Hyphenation”, you can reduce the white space at the edges of your document by using the hyphen (-).
The option “Hyphenation” we find under the tab “Page Layout” in the ribbon.
When we click this we have a number of options we can choose from:
None: There is no break in your document, this is the default setting.
Automatic: Word 2007 will determine where and when, words are broken down in your document.
Manual: You decide which words will be truncated, and how they are broken.
Word each time, gives you a proposal in a dialog window where you can accept the termination, modify, or ignore.
Options for hyphenation: Shows the dialog “Hyphenation” in which you include the width of the hyphenation can enter.
This is the space between the word and the edge.

Line Numbers

Line numbers can be useful when you want to refer to certain parts of your text, because it is easier to talk about a line number when it is displayed, than for someone to start counting the lines.
The option “Line Numbers” is found under the tab “Page layout” in the ribbon.
Clicking on the option “Line Numbers” provides a number of options, that all seems to be clear.
