The use of styles

The style of a document is determined by a number of factors.
The font, colors, backgrounds, etc., all determine the style of the document.
In Word 2007, we have a number of styles which are already provided in a format.
This is called the “Quick Styles”, we find this under the “Home” tab in the Ribbon.
Quick Styles provide us with a number of preformatted headings and subheadings.
To quickly apply any of these styles, place the cursor in a paragraph, and move the mouse pointer over a particular style.
The different styles have the option “Live Preview”.
Click the style you want to use.
You can apply different styles on different titles, subtitles, and paragraphs.
Click the button “More” to view more options.

Clicking on the button “Change Style” gives us again the opportunity to change Style, colors, and the font.

When you choose a different Style, the various “Quick Styles” also change.
In a few clicks we can completely change the layout of our document.

When we insert a theme, we even have the option to format and adjust our document more.
Just click the tab “Page Layout” in the ribbon.
And click the button “Themes”.

The various themes have the “Live Preview” option.
Should it be that you do not find the style you want, you can create your own style.
Read the next part of the lesson to learn how to do this.

Creating a Style

To make a style, first select the text that has the formatting you want to save as a style.
Click the button “More …” in the ribbon.
And choose “Save Selection as a New Quick Style.”
This opens the dialog “Create New Style from Formatting”.
Give your style an appropriate name, and click OK.

Your style is now placed first in the list of quick styles.

By clicking on the button “Modify” we can still change our style of formatting.

Change Style

To edit a previously saved style, click the downward pointing arrow next to the group “Quick Styles”.
This opens the list of styles.

Click the downward-pointing arrow when we move the mouse pointer over the style we want to change.

Select “Modify” from the drop-down menu.

This opens the dialog “Modify Style”.

In this window, we find all the formatting options that we can modify or add to the style.

Click OK when you are satisfied with your changes.
Immediately, all the texts in this format get adjusted in your document.
