Lesson 12: AutoCorrect

12/57 Lessons

What is AutoCorrect

With AutoCorrect typing errors we can improve, insert symbols, and pieces of text.

For example, instead of always typing the word cusrus course. Then you can set up Word so that it automatically changes the word class when you type the word cusrus.

A second example is, when we type (c), Word will automatically replace it with . AutoCorrect will also, place a capital letter at the beginning of each sentence, if this has not been done.

All these AutoCorrect entries are listed. If this list does not contain the required corrections, you can easily add your own AutoCorrect entries.

We find this list in the “Word Options”.
Just click the Office Button, at the top left of the screen, and click the “Word Options”.
Choose the tab “Proofing”.
And click the “AutoCorrect Options …”
This opens the dialog “AutoCorrect”:

The tab “AutoCorrect” is selected.
All options are selected by default.
All these seem to be quite clear, so this needs no further explanation.
At the bottom of the dialog you find the option, “Automatically use suggestions from the spelling checker”.
This means that the same AutoCorrect “dictionary” is used by the spell check program, the same for all Microsoft applications.

Each of these options can be disabled by clicking on it.
We can also enter exceptions for these options, of which we shall learn more later.

Manual input and removal of Auto Corrections.

Although there are already a lot of words in the standard list of misspelled words , we can also manually add some more.
Open the AutoCorrect dialog box by clicking the Office button, choose the tab “Proofing”, and click on “AutoCorrect Options”.
In the Fill dialog box, we find two boxes.
In the left box, we type the word you typed wrong regularly, and in the right box, we type the word in the left box that must be replaced with.

Click the “Add” button when you’re done.
The word is added to the list.
Click OK.
And OK again.
The next time when you type the word wrong, it will automatically be corrected as soon as your spacebar or the Enter button is clicked on your keyboard.

To remove Auto corrections from our list, click the Office Button, select tab “Proofing” and click the “AutoCorrect Options”.
Select delete AutoCorrect from the list, and click the “Delete” button.

Corrections enter through Auto Spell Check

A second way to provide corrections in AutoCorrect is by manually correcting a spelling.
Select this tab “Review” in the ribbon, and click the “Spelling and Grammar”.

This opens the dialog “Spelling and Grammar”. And selects the first misspelled word in our document.

In the box below it gives us a suggestion, or some suggestions, which we can choose to replace the misspelled word.

By clicking on the “AutoCorrect” we can add the word to our list, and improve this word in our document.

If you click on the button “Add to Dictionary”, the word would be added to our list, but this would not be improved in our document.

So, once you have clicked a button, Word will search for the next misspelled word in our document.
