Lesson 54 : Hyperlinking

54/57 Lessons

Create Hyperlink

A hyperlink is not necessarily linked to a page on the Internet, this can be linked to another page in the same document or another document, even another file in another application.
The most common hyperlink is the one where you type in an Internet address.
Word will automatically create a hyperlink for this, once you hit the space bar or click the Enter key on your keyboard.
For this you should always follow the hyperlink to press the Ctrl key on your keyboard. When you prefer not to do so, click the Office Button, and select “Word Options”.

Check the box for the text “Use CTRL+ click to follow the hyperlink” checkbox. This is stored under the “Advanced” tab.

Hyperlinks from text

To create a hyperlink from text, select the text and click the button “Hyperlink” under the tab “Insert” ribbon.
In the dialog that appears, the top box has the text you had selected.

On the left we have several options to “Link to”.
By default, the first option is selected.
Depending on what you choose here, the middle part of the dialog changes.
As in the above picture “Existing File or Web Page” is selected, we see the recently viewed Web pages when we click this button.
This gives us the option to pick an address between the last viewed pages on the Internet.
Or we can insert a web address in the box “Address:”.

When you click on the button “Text to Display”, you can enter information that is displayed when the mouse pointer moves over your link in your document.

After you enter the Hyperlink, click the OK button.
The text color in your document is now changed, and has underscores.

Create hyperlinks to other files

We also have the ability to create a hyperlink to another file on your computer.
For this, first select the text in your document, and click the button “Hyperlink” in the ribbon.
This shows us again the dialog “Insert”.
On the left side is the “Existing File or Web page” is selected which is good.
Besides the “Look in:” click the downward pointing arrow, and navigate to the file you want to link.

Select the file from the list.
If you wish you can enter the, “c” for this file.
Click OK when you’re done.

Remove Hyperlink

To remove a Hyperlink, we first select the text that contains the hyperlink.
And then click the button “Hyperlink” in the ribbon.
This shows us again the dialog “Insert hyperlink”.
Click the “Remove Link”.
A second way, and perhaps the fastest, is to right click the hyperlink in your document, with your mouse and select “Remove Hyperlink” from the drop-down menu.
