Add Contents

When we have used different heading styles (Heading 1, heading2, head … 9), provided as standard in the group “Styles” under the tab “Home” in the ribbon, we can create an index in Word.

For this, place the cursor in your document first, at the place where you wish to insert the index.
Then click the “Table of Contents” under the tab “References” in the ribbon.
This opens a drop-down menu with three pre-formatted “Contents”.

1. Automatic table 1:
adds the title “Table of Contents” to, the content in the various feilds below.

2. Automatic table 2:
adds the title “Table of Contents” to, the various content fields below.

3. Manual table:
adds the title “Table of Contents” to, the example of contents below, where we can make changes in text and page numbering.

In this example I click option 2, “Automatic Table 2”.
Word will do the rest.
Quick and easy.

Options Table of Contents

When we have used one of the preformatted “table of contents”, we can set these options.
Just click again the “table of Contents” option under the tab “References” in the ribbon.

Choose the bottom of the drop-down menu for “Insert Table of Contents”.
This opens the dialog “Table of Contents”.

At the top we have a “Print Preview” and “Web Preview” window.

Below that we have the option “Show Page Numbers”.
When you select this box, it gives the page numbers, uncheck it and it does not give page numbers.

Below that we have the option “Right align page numbers”.
If you select this, it gives the page numbers on the right side of the blade, uncheck it and it gives the page numbers next to the “Header”.

Among them we find the “Tab Leader”.
Clicking on the downward pointing arrow gives us three choices to fill character.

Below that we have the option “Formats”.
Clicking on the downward pointing arrow, gives us a choice of six other formatting options.

Among them we find the number of levels.
Default setting is set to three heading styles, but you can adjust using the upward or downward pointing arrow button. Maximum is nine.

To its right we have the option “Use hyperlinks instead of page numbers.”
When this is selected, hyperlinks are shown instead of page numbers.
An example is shown in the window “Web preview”.
To make use of the hyperlink, place your mouse pointer over a Hyperlink with the Ctrl key on your keyboard pressed. Click the link to navigate to this subject.

Click the OK button when settings are complete.
This displays an alert box, indicating whether you want the index style to be replaced.
When you click on the “Yes” button, the previous index will adapt to the new settings.
If you click the button “No”, then the index will remain unchanged.
