Lesson 44 : Footnotes and Endnotes

44/57 Lessons

Inserting a Footnote
If there are any among you who do not know the difference between an end note, or a footnote. Then here is the explanation.
An endnote is placed at the end of a page, and a foot note at the end of the document.
Both are comments relating to an element from the text.
To create a footnote you first place your cursor next to the text where you want to insert the footnote, select the tab “References” in the ribbon, and click the button “Insert Footnote”.

This brings us automatically to the bottom of the page where we can type comments.

We can add one or more footnotes to a page.
Footnotes are numbered from 1 onwards …

Insert an endnote
Inserting an endnote is done in the same way you insert a footnote, just click the button “Insert Endnote” in the ribbon. Quite Logical.
The button “Insert Footnote” is located next to the button “Insert Endnote”, and brings us to the end of our document.

Remove foot-or endnote

To create or remove a footnote or endnote, select the Sub script in your document, and click the Delete key on your keyboard.

Footnotes and Endnote Options
By default, a footnote superscript has numbers, and an endnote superscript has Roman numerals
We can change the options.

Click on the downward pointing arrow in the group “Footnotes” in the ribbon.

This opens the dialog “Footnote and endnote”.

In the upper section “Location” select the location of the foot-and endnotes.
And what’s interesting is the “Convert” button.
This allows us to convert footnotes to endnotes and vice versa.

In the section “Format”, we can choose a type of formatting. Self labeled Enter, or choose one symbol.
The beginning number.
And the continuous or re-numbering in each section or page.

And then we can in the last section “Apply Changes to” to set whether we want them for our entire document or only a section. Of course you then have different document sections.
Click the “Apply” button when you’re done.

Footnotes and endnotes show
To show footnotes or endnotes in your document, place the mouse pointer over your footnote.
This shows us a box, containing the comment that is mentioned in the footnote or endnote.

To change a footnote or endnote double click it in the document.
This takes you automatically to the remark at the bottom of the page or document, where you can edit.

Clicking on the “Add Text” tab under “References” in the ribbon, also brings you automatically at the bottom, where all comments are available in footnotes.
Have you both foot-and endnotes used in your document, a dialog window will appear where you must choose whether your footnote area or endnote area will be display.

Navigating between footnotes or endnotes
We do have a number of ways for navigating between footnotes or endnotes.

One way is by clicking the “Next footnote” under the tab “References” in the ribbon.
Click the downward-pointing arrow when you want to navigate to the following endnote. Or to a previous footnote or endnote.

A second way is to click on the button “Select Browse Objects” at the bottom right of the application window, and selecting “Browse by footnote” or “Browse by endnote”.
If you do not know where you can find it, in Lesson 4 this is explained.

A third way is the tab “Home” option in the Ribbon, click the “Find” button and selecting “Go to …”.
This opens a dialog with three tabs. Choose the tab “Go …”, select “Footnote” or “Endnote” in the left side of the dialog, and click the “Next” button.
This brings you to the following footnote or endnote.
If you know the number of the footnote or endnote, you can enter this in the space provided and then click “Go”.
