48/65 Lessons

Masks also can also be beautifully combined to create compositions using a number of photographs and a gradient mask along with contrasting movements.

New show

  • Create a new show titled “Show 42_Mixture”. Click [File]> [New Show] change the [Show Title], and retain the [Aspect Ratio] at 4:3. Click [Create].

Example 1

Inserting and Scaling Photos

  • Select the photographs “Bride” and “Groom” from Lesson 42. Drag them to the slide list, but as layers.
  • For both pictures set the [Scaling] to [Fill Frame]. Right click on the slide and select [Customize Slide]> [Scale Slide Image]> [Fill Frame].

Adjusting the Slide duration

  • The duration of the slide is set at 8 sec.

Organizing Layers

  • Double-click the slide and select [Layers]> [Layer Settings].
Notice that the layer sequence is: [Bride] followed by [Groom].

Additional gradient layer

  • Now, to blend both the pictures we add an additional gradient layer. We do this by using the [+] icon and selecting [Add Gradient]. We just want a gradient in white and black. The following figure displays the  required settings. The gradient moves from black to white, horizontally. The [position] is 25 for  the white portion and 60 for the black portion. Then click [Reverse Color]. Click [OK] and then check whether this layer is on top. If not, correct it.

Mask

  • This [Gradient 1] layer is our mask. Select it and select the [Masking Layer] check box. The [Mask type] selected is [Intensity (Grayscale)]. Thus, the left side of the underlying image is not displayed.

Moving Photos

  • Now we move the 2 photos. Select [Effects]> [Motion Effects]. Select [Bride] and slide the [Zoom] up from 65% to 100% and [Pan] of 0 x 24 to 33 x 21. For [Groom] we slide the [Zoom] down from 165% to 100% and [Pan] of -13 x 19 to 0 x 0. Click [OK] and close this window. We want the lady’s photo to be displayed clearly, in the picture. If this is not the case, we can increase the intensity of black in [Gradient 1].

2nd example

Scaling Photos and using them as layers

  • Select the “Baby” and “Gentleman” photos from lesson 42. Drag them to the 2nd slide as layers.
  • We also set the [Scaling] to [Fill Frame] for these two pictures.

Adjusting the Slide duration

  • The duration of the slide is set at 8 sec.

Orgainzing Layers

  • Double-click the slide and select [Layers]> [Layer Settings]. Notice that the layer sequence is: [Baby] followed by [Gentleman].

Applying a Vignette

  • We place a stamp on these 2 pictures. Select [Layers]> [Editing], select the layer [Baby] and select the  [Vignette] option and click on the [Vignette] button. Select [Vignette Type]> [Shape] and select the [Ellipse] option in the drop down menu and set the [Vignette size] at 25. Click [OK]. Then select the layer [Gentleman], select the [Vignette] option, click the [Vignette] button and set the [Shape] to [Ellipse] and the [Vignette Size] to 30.
    Click [OK].

Adding a Gradient Layer

  • To blend the 2 photos together once again we add a [Gradient] layer. Go to [Layer]> [Layer Settings]. Click the [+] icon and select [Add Gradient]. We just want a gradient with white and black. The following figure displays the required setting. The gradient goes from white to black, horizontallly. The position for the white portion is 30 and for the black portion it is 60. Click [OK] and then check whether this layer is on top. If not, correct the order.

Mask

  • This [Gradient 1] layer is our mask. Select it and select the [Masking Layer] checkbox. The [Mask type] is set to [Intensity (Grayscale)]. As a result, the right portion of the underlying image is not displayed.

Motion effects for Layers

  • Now we add motion effects the 2 photos. Select [Effects]> [Motion Effects]. Select [Baby] and slide the [Zoom] down from 110% to 80% and set a [Pan] of -2 x -34 to -23 x 0. For [Gentleman], we slide the [Zoom] up from 75% to 110% and set the [Pan] from 0 x 20 to 20 x 0. Click [OK] and close this window.

Third example

Scaling Photos and using them as layers

  • Select the pictures “Green Bridesmaid” and “More Bridesmaids” from Lesson 42 and drag them to slide 3 as layers.
  • We set the [Scaling] to [Fill Frame] for both pictures.

Adjusting the Slide duration

  • The duration of the slide is set to 8 sec.

Orgainizing Layers

  • Double-click the slide and select [Layers]> [Layer Settings]. Notice that the layer sequence is: [Green Bridesmaid] and then [More Bridesmaids].

Additional gradient layer

  • To blend the 2 photos together efficiently, we add another gradient layer. We do this by clicking the [+] icon and selecting [Add Gradient]. We want our gradient to be in white and black. The following figure shows the settings that we use. The [Gradient] goes from white to black, at an angle of 45%. The [position] for the white portion is 35 and for the black portion it is 60 and the rotatory [Angle] is 324. Click [OK] and then check whether this layer is on top. If not, correct it.

Mask

  • This [Gradient 1] layer is our mask. Select it and select the [Masking Layer] check box. The [Mask type] to [Intensity (Grayscale)] stand or be put.

Moving Layers

  • Now, we place motion effects for the 2 photos. Select [Effects]> [Motion Effects]. Select [Green Bridesmaid] and slide up the [Zoom] from 100% to 165% and set the [Pan] from -8 x 2 to 0 to -11. For [More Bridesmaids] we set the [Zoom] at 165% and set the [Pan] from 0 x 0 to 0 x 30. Click [OK] and close this window.

So, these were some examples of “Contrasting patchwork”.
