Lesson 18: Color Corrections (4)

Brightness / contrast (brightness / contrast)

In the latest version of Photoshop CS 3, the “Brightness / Contrast” feature has improved.
In previous versions, this feature did more damage to your picture than it did good. However, if any of you made use of this feature in the earlier versions, do not worry, you can still set it in the old way.

As an example I show two differences here.
The photo below is the original. I think there is too little contrast in this picture, so we are going to adjust the Brightness and Contrast.

We click on this “Image” – “Adjustments” – “Brightness / Contrast” from the menu bar.
The dialog box opens.
I want to work the old way, I check the “Legacy” box.
I want to work in the new way, then I remove the check from the “Legacy” box.

The difference is remarkable, the new way you can give a lot more contrast without maiming the picture completely.

Auto color / Auto Contrast / Auto Levels

“Auto Color”, “Auto Contrast”, “Auto Levels” are three automatic tools that we can use to perform corrections.
les18_image04_en

The “Auto Levels” command adjusts the black and white pixels in an image. Cuts a part of the shadows and highlights in each channel and changes the lightest and darkest pixels in each color channel to white (level 255) and black (level 0).
Intermediate pixel values ??are evenly distributed. The contrast of an image using “Auto Levels” is increased. Because the “Auto Levels” command adjusts all color channels individually, it neither causes or eliminates color cast.

The “Auto Levels” command gives good results in some images with an average distribution of pixel values ??that merely need increase in the contrast.

The “Auto Contrast” command adjusts the contrast of the image automatically. Since channels are adjusted separately by “Auto Contrast”, it neither causes nor eliminates color cast.
With Auto Contrast, the shadows and highlights in an image are trimmed and the remaining lightest and darkest pixels in the image are changed to white and black. This highlights appear lighter and shadows darker.
When identifying the lightest and darkest pixels in an image, the white and black pixels are trimmed by 0.5% by standard. This means that the first 0.5% at both ends of the range will be ignored.
This command is not suitable for the improvement of images with color.

The “Auto Color” command is to adjust the contrast and color of an image by searching and identifying the image for shadows, midtones and highlights. The “Auto Color” command neutralizes the midtones with a target color of RGB 128 on grayscale and trim the shadows and highlights by 0.5%.
We can change the default settings in the Options dialog for automatic color correction.
