Lesson 32: Photo Editing (1)

32/85 Lessons

Red Eye Tool (Red eyes)

Red eyes, a common problem.
But with Photoshop, it is a piece of cake to solve this problem.
The “Red Eye” Tool is found under the “Spot Healing” Tool in the Toolbox:

As an example, I have a picture of my wife.
les32_image01_en

The photo is zoomed out, so the first thing I do is, I zoom in so that I can see what I am doing.
I select the “Red Eye” tool and I click the pupil of the eye.
And actually you do not even have to do this in the pupil, if you already are in the neighborhood, Photoshop knows what you want to achieve.
I repeat it for the right eye.

That was not difficult.
This aside, the options for the “Red Eye” tool set are not much, so I leave them for what they are, namely 50% and 50%.

Dodge Tool and Sponge Tool

Using the “Dodge” Tool and the “Sponge” Tool, we can change the color and the color intensity.

The “Dodge” Tool, we also find it in the Toolbox.
Together with the “Burn” Tool and the “Sponge” Tool.

The “Dodge” tool will display the details of the picture brighter.
The “Burn” tool will display the details of the picture darker.
The “Sponge” tool changes the color intensity.

As an example, I have a picture of a tooth that I found on the Internet.
Not the teeth, just the picture.

Ok, using the “Dodge” Tool and the “Sponge” tool, we will see how this man / woman’s teeth appear in your hands.
First, we choose the “Dodge” tool in the toolbox.
In the options bar, we give the settings for

  • the diameter of the brush:
keep the diameter of the brush smaller than the teeth because we only want his / her teeth a little lighter, not the gums.
  • the hardness of the brush:
I posted this at 0% because I have no desire to draw rings of color in these teeth.
  • Range box is on the “Midtones”, this is good
You also have the choice of Shadows, but this would remove the shadow colors in the mouth. Highlights would remove the lighter colors. In this case, both of these are not desired.
  • The exposure box is currently at 50%, but this seems like a lot. This is because of the lighter colors, the higher the percentage, the lighter the shade around the teeth. It must of course remain a bit, so in this case 30% will be sufficient.
  • And at the far right we have the airbrush tool.
This button works like an airbrush, ie you hold down the mouse button and the color of the teeth gets whiter and whiter and whiter… Personally I do not like to do much, so I check this button.

Once all settings are entered, click on the places you want to lighten. That is the teeth.

With the “Sponge” Tool, we can give the teeth a more natural color by removing the saturation of white. In other words, we darken the white teeth.
Now I hear you thinking, now we have white teeth, why should I now darken them?
Well this is much more natural, not everyone wants to be walking down the street with such a white smile.

Click the “Sponge” tool, we find this under the “Dodge” tool.
In the Options bar, we choose “Desaturate”, because we want to darken, not lighten.
The flow box is at 50%, this is good.
I do not want to use the airbrush, so this should not be checked.
I zoom in on the teeth to be able to edit this precisely, I will merely darken the teeth, not the gums.
