Lesson 57: Vector-based Shapes (1)

57/85 Lessons

Circle

We go first to see how we draw a simple shape, a circle.
As an example, I opened a picture of the female version of Leonardo Da Vinci’s Vitruvian man, namely the Vitruvian woman.
Later in the next lesson when we see how we use the “Pentool”, she will not wear shorts.
If any of you take offense here, then please skip this lesson.

OK, now that you are alerted, click the downward-pointing black arrow, at the bottom right of the “Rectangle” Tool.
This opens a submenu.
Select the “Elliptical” Tool.
Above, in the options bar, we find different shapes, the “Freeform Pen” Tool and the “Pen” Tool.
The “Freeform Pen” Tool and the “Pen Tool” are also found in the Tool Box.
The “Pen” Tool can perhaps be complicated to use, but I will try the best possible way to explain how to use them.
Once you’ve mastered this technique, you will be amazed at what you can do here.

When we use a pen or shape tool to work, we find three different modes on the left of the Options Bar Draw.

  • The first is the Shape Layers (Shape Layers).
This makes our shape on a new layer. We have the possibility to draw different shapes on a shape layer. A shape layer consists of two parts, you have the fill layer, where the fill is determined. And you have a linked vector mask that shows the outline of the shape.
  • The second is Paths (Paths)
We have chosen this option, then we actually draw a work path on the layer that is selected. We can make a selection from this path, a vector mask and we can fill and stroke the path with a color. Please note that a temporary path is lost if we do not save. Paths aapear in the “Paths” palette. If you do not see it, click “Windows” – “Paths” in the menu bar.
  • And third, wee Fill pixels (Fill Pixels)
When we work in this mode, we draw directly on the layer. We can only use the shape tools in this mode.

For our circle, we use a Shape Layer.
We select the “Elliptical” Tool in the Toolbox and select the Shape Layer button in the Options bar.
You click and drag the mouse pointer over the image.
Would you like to draw a perfect circle, hold the Shift-key on your keyboard pressed.
If you want to draw a perfect circle that starts in the center, hold the Shift-button, click and drag the mouse pointer and then and only then, hold the Alt-key on your keyboard.

Fill and Borders

First we change the color of the circle.
Double-click the fill layer from the layer.
The dialog “Pick a solid color” appears when we choose our color or enter.
In the “Blend Mode” (Blend Mode), we choose “Multiply”.

To provide edges to our circle, we need to add a Layer Style.
Click on the “Layer Style” button at the bottom of the “Layers” panel.
Choose “Stroke” from the bottom of the list.
The dialog “Layer Style” appears with the option “Stroke” selected.
Enter your settings and click OK.
I chose Size: 6px.
Position: Center
And color: white
Then we get this:

In the next lesson, we will add a rectangle.
