Lesson 5 : Setting our ‘zoom’ preferences

5/85 Lessons

Shortcuts

We use shortcuts to run our commands faster.
So I suggest that you remember these, maybe for not all, but for those you use often. Such as those for zooming.
The first are the keys “Ctrl +” and “Ctrl” to zoom in and zoom out.
For Mac users, the Ctrl key is replaced by the Command key.
Select the photo you want to zoom and click the buttons Ctrl and + on your keyboard to zoom in or the buttons Ctrl and – to zoom out.

In the “General” tab of “Preferences”, I also checked the “zoom resizes windows” box as you might have noticed.
This will maximize the window to maximum screen size when we click the “Ctrl +” button on our keyboard.
For some of us, this will be useful, but not for others. The choice is yours.
If you have you checked this box and you still want to zoom in without changing the screen size you hold the Alt key for Windows or the Option key for Mac.

“Zoom” Tool Image22

Another way to zoom in and out is the “zoom” tool in the Toolbox.
Select the Zoom Tool in the Toolbox. Click a specific les05_image01_en
location in the image where you want to zoom in and click and hold the Alt key when you want to zoom out.
When we right click on the image, it gives a dropdown menu with the following choices:

  • Fit on Screen
  • Actual Pixels
  • Print Size

Fit on screen is easy to understand.
Actual Pixels, you see an image pixel by pixel in the window.
Print Size is completely useless. This would have to zoom the image to the size that we would print.
We also have the choices to “Zoom In” and “Zoom Out” which do the same as the “Zoom” Tool.

To zoom in or out when another tool is selected in les05_image02_en
the Toolbox, click:
Ctrl + Spacebar to zoom in
Ctrl + Alt + Spacebar to zoom out.
You can click and drag while holding the Ctrl button and the Spacebar to zoom in or zoom out in a particular place, when, for example, the Marquee tool is selected.

TIP: To quickly return to the 100% zoom, that is to display the image in full size, we double-click the Zoom Tool.
TIP: To quickly display the image to “Fit on Screen”, that is the full window size, we can double click on the “Hand” in the Toolbox.

Two tips that some of you probably know and others do not.

Zooming with the mouse wheel

With the mouse wheel on our mouse we can move up, down, left or right to navigate in our photo.
To navigate above or below, move the mouse wheel just up or down.
To navigate to left or right, hold the Ctrl key on your keyboard pressed.
To go fast, hold the Shift key is also pressed.
Nothing special.

But there is more, we can also zoom with the mouse wheel.
When you hold the Alt key (Option key for Mac) on your keyboard pressed, you can use the mouse wheel to zoom in or out.
If you want to use them frequently, you can set this preference in the “Preferences” dialog box.
Click on “Edit” – “Preference” – “General” … in the menu bar and check the “Zoom with Scroll Wheel” box and you do not have to hold the Alt key.

Awesome!
