Lesson 83: Smart Filters (Smart Filters)

83/85 Lessons

What are Smart Filters?

Using Smart Filters we can apply one or more effects, without changing the original pixels. We can later modify and even delete these effects.

Applying SmartFilter

For clarity, I have created a channel of my selection of the background, that I can use later as a mask, to which I apply the filter (s).
If you have forgotten how to do this: make your selection and click “Select” – “Save Selection” from the menu bar.
So, our selection, which we will insert in some time, has been saved. So we can use it whenever and wherever we need it.

If you have created a channel, you can still make changes by selecting the “channel” palette and color with black or white. This can be useful.

To apply a Smart Filter, we must convert the layer to a “Smart Object”.
For this, you select the layer and click “Layer” – “Smart Object” – “Convert to Smart Objects” in the menu bar or click “Filter” – “Convert for Smart Filters” in the menu bar.
If you choose the later, the layer will automatically be changed to a layer for “Smart Objects”. Photoshop will show you a dialog box where this is stated. So click OK.
Now, if you have cancelled the selection for any reason, you must first load.
Click on “Select” – “Load Selection” in the menu bar.
Click “Filter” – “Convert for Smart Filter” in the menu bar.
Click again in the “Filter” menu and select the filter you want to apply.
Specify your options for this filter and click OK.

If you wish to apply a second filter to the same selection, click again on “Filter” in the menubar and select the filter you want to apply.
Right next to each filter, you have a button for the “Blending options”.
Double click this, the “Blending Options” dialog box opens.
Each filter has its own dialog box where you can set the mode and transparency.
If you have applied different filters to a layer, you can change their stacking order by clicking and dragging it to a higher or lower position. This gives a different display in the photo.
You have the ability to apply Smart Filters to images and text.
Apply a Smart Filter to a text, you can still change this text later.
The filter is then applied to the modified text.
