Lesson 65: Tools (1)

65/85 Lessons

Brush Tool

Actually, I did this lesson a little earlier, but once I go into explaining further and further, I actually forget the basics.
I will not elaborate on every detail of every tool, it is best that you decide that by experimenting, but I want to give a little knowledge.

First I will discuss the “Brush” tool, or brush.
To use the “Brush” tool, select the “Brush” Tool in the Tool Box. Make sure that you have set the desired foreground color and the right layer is selected.
Click and drag the circle (pointer) in the image where you want to paint.
The circle represents the diameter of the brush.
We set the different options for our brush in the Options bar:

Once we have entered these settings, we can save them and use them later.
Click on the downward pointing black arrow next to the brush in the options bar.
Give it a name in the dialog box that appears and click OK.

For the second option, the “Brush”, we click on the downward pointing arrow.
Choose a diameter for our brush.
Give “Hardness” (Hardness).
And choose a “type”.
And in the third section we give a Mode (Mode). (More about the different modes in a later lesson).
In the fourth box, set the “opacity” (transparency).
And in the last box we set the “Flow”, this is only useful if you have also selected the “Airbrush” in the far right of the options bar.
“Flow” refers to the transparency of the airbrush.

Brush palette

We use the “Brush” palette to select preset brushes.
To open the “Brushes” palette, click “Window” – “Brushes” from the menu bar.
On the left side of the palette you can set different options for the brush you’ve chosen.
At the bottom of the palette, you will see the example.
You can adjust the angle, diameter, hardness and a number of options.
Try the presets out, there can be nice shapes in there, especially when you experiment with different options.

Create Brush Tip

If you wish to create your own “Brush Tip”, eg a drawing that you made, first select the drawing with the “Ellipse” tool.
Click “Edit” – “Define Brush Preset” … in the menu bar.
In the dialog that appears, you give your preset a name and click OK.

If you want to use this Brush Tip now, first select the Brush Tool in the Tool Box and only then open the “Brushes” palette.
As you can see, the newly created Brush Tip is added to our list of Brush Tips.
You can also use this new tip with all options.

You can also use an existing Brush Tip to create a new Brush Tip.
Select the first tip in the “Brushes” palette.
Specify any of the options for this Tip and click the downward pointing arrow in the upper right corner of the “Brushes” palette.
Select “New Brush Preset” from the dropdown menu.
Enter a name and click OK.
You will find this new tip in the Brush palette.
