Lesson 55: Text (6)

Text on a path (1)

For this tutorial I opened two images. One of a CD with just a Background layer and a text. Each line of text has its own layer.

First I want to place the text www.gratiscursus.be above the CD-ROM.
To enter text on a path, you first require the text in its normal form.
Whether it is in the same image or not, this does not matter.
Whether this is “point text” or “paragraph text” also does not make a difference.

First, we select the text by double clicking the icon on the right side of the layer.
Then click on “Edit” – “Copy” in the menu bar or click Ctrl + C on your keyboard.
Then select the picture where you want to copy the text.
In the picture with the CD-ROM, we first draw a path on which we want to paste the text.
In this example, I want the text around the CD-ROM in a circle,
To draw a circle path, select the “Elliptical” tool in the Toolbox and click the “Paths” button in the Options bar.
To help, I have a few guides (Guides) placed on the image.
If you do not know how to do this, just go back to lesson 50 of this course.
Click and drag the mouse pointer from the top left to bottom right corner of the guides.

Once you have drawn the path, you can hide the guides again.
The path appears in our image as a fine gray line. This does not make a new layer, but when you make a “Path”, it will appear in the “Paths” Palette.
To open “Paths” palette, choose “Window” – “Paths” in the menu bar.
Double-click in the Pathname and give this a more appropriate name.
Click OK when this is done in the “Save Path” dialog box.
Next, choose the Text tool in the Toolbox, click the “Center Text” button in the options bar
and move the mouse pointer over the curved path until it changes.
Once you see this, click.

Then click Ctrl + V on your keyboard.

To make the path invisible, click an empty spot in the “Path” palette to deselect any path. Should it still be visible, zoom in and out again here.
This is because Photoshop sometimes has difficulty to display the screen again.
If the text you just placed is not in the middle, you can click the Ctrl button, place the mouse pointer just above the path until it changes into a double arrow and drag it left or right.
In the next lesson, we will add text at the bottom.

Awesome!
