Lesson 25: Selection Tools (2)

Magic Wand (Wand)

Let us take a picture of a hot air balloon that was taken in Albuquerque (USA) and then move it to St Nicholas (St Nicholas is also the balloon city of Belgium).
And we will do this without flying, but using the Photoshop.

We start with the “Magic Wand” tool, but in this example we will switch from one selection tool to the other selection tools.
Select the “Magic Wand” tool in the Toolbox.
And click anywhere on the hot air balloon:

If you want to select more than one selection, hold the Shift key on your keyboard while you click the “Magic Wand” tool again on an unselected area on the balloon.
Or just click the button “Add to Selection” in the Options bar and click on an unselected site.
I like working with shortcuts so I use the shift key, the choice is yours.
But in this way, it takes an eternity to select the entire balloon.
So we go into the background (ie air) to select and then invert the selection.

I’ll start again, so, we click “Select” – “Deselect” (Deselect) in the menu bar to deselect it (or use the shortcut Ctrl + D on your keyboard), and click anywhere on a place in the background.

Only part of the background is selected, so we keep the Shift key on the keyboard pressed and click again with the “Magic Wand” tool on an unselected place in the background.
If you wish to cancel a final selection, click the Ctrl + Z on your keyboard or choose “Edit” – “Undo Magic Wand” in the menu bar.
Now a greater part of the background is selected, but on the left side of the picture, we have a part which is not selected and in our balloon, there are sections that are selected, which we do not wish to select.

We can increase the tolerance in the Options bar, but this may result in even more parts to be selected in our balloon, that we do not wish to select.

In the next tutorial I explain how to use this tolerance (tolerance) to proceed.

Awesome!
